Monster Mash Countdown Blitz Day 8: Freaked

Aisi Turay is losing it. Literally.

A couple of months ago, she could see ghosts and help them move on, or vanquish demons in her way with a few choice insults. Now? Not so much, and she’s pretty sure her least favorite demon is behind it.

Malus is back. He’s stronger than the last time she faced him, wielding power she never imagined a demon could have. Aisi realizes that he’s just a henchman for something much worse…something that wants everyone she loves gone.

As Malus brings the worst he’s got and then some, Aisi wages a fight for her life, and maybe her soul.

Juli Caldwell has a degree in English from Weber State University. She is the author of Psyched and Freaked, YA paranormal suspense novels; sweet romances Arms Wide Open and Beyond Perfection: a latter-day romance; and Secrets of the Mine, an adventure fantasy tale for tweens and teens. She also freelances as an editor for kicks. She lives near the shores of the Great Salt Lake with her husband, two bookworm daughters, and a dog who sheds too much.

Q and A with the Author

      1.       When did you know you wanted to write books? I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I wouldn’t write. I’m the kid who lived in a book and I always have characters and their dialogue streaming through my brain. There are two kinds of writers: people who think, “hey, I have a great idea...I think I’ll write a book!” and people who have no choice but to let the stories out of their heads. I think I’m the latter.
2.       What does your writing process look like? My writing process is a hot mess. I’m the least organized person I know, so I guess it’s a good thing my characters tell their stories for me. J.K. Rowling once said that stories sometimes tell themselves. Mine do. I just hope I do my characters a little justice.

10 fun Freaked (and Juli) facts:
·         Freaked is the sequel to Psyched.
  1.          Aisi is biracial—half white and half African- American. Her dad is from Sierra Leone (or he claims to be...) and her mom is a freckled redhead from deep in the heart of American Appalachia.
  2.          Aisi’s name is a Mende word that means sunshine. It’s her dad’s nickname for her.
  3.          When I started writing Psyched, I didn’t want to have a specific setting in mind. And then I remembered driving through western Pennsylvania on a cross-country road trip, and I knew those gray riverside cliffs were perfect for the climax scene at the end. These cliffs appear in the opening scene of Freaked as well.
  4.          I use a lot of African mythology in Freaked. It’s such a great source for inspiration—we don’t study it in school so the stories feel fresh and different.
  5.         The demon’s name, Malus Indolus, means Evil Genius in Latin. Don’t worry—Aisi mocks him for this.
  6.          The actual translation would be Malus Indoles, but readers kept calling him “malus in-dolls” so as I edited Psyched, I changed the spelling to something where ‘In-dole-us’ would be obvious. I forgot this as I wrote Freaked and had to change everything all over. Oh well...
  7.          Aisi’s best friend Zinnia is based on my high school self—a little wired and crazy but overall harmless. Except I never would have dared to do that kissing challenge thing...(read Psyched if you’re not sure what that’s all about!)
  8.          Aisi appeared in my head fully formed and all kinds of sassy during one of my college classes. I wrote down the rough outline for Psyched and laid the foundation for Freaked instead of taking notes that night. I guess my mind wanders during night classes.
  9.          Aisi is the kind of girl I always wanted to be—strong, loyal, fierce, a warrior.

Suspicion quickly falls upon volunteer coach Diego Diaz, a one-time gang member whose hot Latino rant over an offside call pops up on YouTube. The media eagerly pursue the delicious story line of out-of-control soccer parents. Case closed–until the boyfriend of Diaz’s grown daughter, Hector Rivera, a former high school soccer star but now a college dropout in a dead-end job, tries to figure out the truth, and himself.

Chronicling a wide cross-section of the human condition, William P. Barrett has worked as an award-winning journalist across the country and abroad for major newspapers and national magazines dating back more than four decades. At various times he’s been a police reporter, court reporter, local government reporter, feature writer, foreign correspondent, national correspondent writing about very small places with very big problems, investigative reporter and business reporter. Barrett’s longest stretch was at Forbes, where his writings illuminated dark sections of the financial world and sent miscreants to prison. A New Jersey native, Barrett holds two degrees from Rutgers, one in law, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder. On the weekends he has refereed youth soccer in the West, including Southern California, for 17 years. Barrett now lives in Seattle. This is his debut novel.

Snippet

Those in the know called her The Spy. The M.O. of Helen Miller in support of her children's soccer endeavors in Valley Mirage was cunning. A slim, nondescript woman, she lurked the opposing sideline hoping to pick up actionable intelligence—No. 10, the star player, would be leaving at halftime to attend a family wedding, No. 3 had complained to his mom about a hurting right leg—that she could report back to her coach. In the course of a single match she might move back and forth a half-dozen times, almost like she had a bladder problem but couldn't find the restroom.
Then there was the fellow known as The Optometrist. Not because he was a trained medical practitioner, which he wasn't. And not because he wore glasses, although he did—big thick ones that resembled the bottom of old-fashioned Coca-Cola bottles. No, Harvey Richter was called The Optometrist because of his
one constant refrain standing on the sidelines watching his kids play. "Ref, are you blind?" he shouted after almost every adverse call, which meant he did a lot of shouting. "Ref, are you blind?"

Time for a Snippet!
Snippet #2
I tied Badger’s lead rope to the hitching post. “Lyle, you can help me.”
“Sure.”
“It’s in my truck.”
Lyle followed me out of the barn.
I stopped at the passenger door of my truck and turned to Lyle. “ What are the suspicious circumstances?”
Lyle’s mouth opened then clamped shut. He shook his head.
“Come on Lyle.”
“Should have known you wanted something from me. You never ask for help.”
“Connor was like a little brother to me.”
Lyle’s eyes darted back and forth while his jaw worked. “If you heard about suspicious circumstances, then you also heard that I don’t know nothin’ until Monday. And neither do you.”
I opened the truck door and slid the painting out, turning it to face Lyle.
His eyes widened, then blinked hard as his hand reached to cover his trembling mouth. “It’s perfect,” he whispered.
“I need to know what happened that morning.” A quick cramp squeezed my abdomen. I’d need another dose of ibuprofen to make it through the funeral.
Lyle didn’t take his eyes from the painting. “Me, too.” Then his eyes met mine, and he said, “I will find out. But today, I will honor the family’s wishes.”
I gnawed my lower lip. “Monday then.”
“There’s nothing you could do about it anyway. This,” he pointed to the painting, “is what the family needs right now. Go on and take it up to the house.”

"From an early age I have always been fascinated by the written word and the mood and atmosphere it creates for a reader; especially those books that affect me and transport me to some far-off place. These are the elements I strive to create in my books. My books in many ways record what most affects me: my feelings and experiences with family, friends, and those I have run into on my life's journey. My hope is that in my books you will find something that touches you, something which will resonate in your soul and remind you that you are strong and can overcome anything, especially if you have the support of loving friends and family." - Ayr Bray

Ayr Bray is from the Pacific Northwest, but travels as much as possible so she doesn't have to deal with the cold.

Q and A With the Author

When did you know you wanted to write books?

I knew I wanted to write stories from the time I was nine and saw my mom writing. Though she was never published she will always be my example of an accomplished writer/author.

What other hobbies do you enjoy when you are not writing?

My family travels the USA 100% of our time, so we love to explore new areas. My favorite place on Earth is anywhere near the ocean with a beach. I love to sail and swim.

Ayr loves to hear from readers. Connect with her at her website http://www.ayrbray.com or on Facebook at http://goo.gl/kAAO3u.

Snippet

A knock came upon the door.
“Enter,” Darcy called out, releasing Elizabeth’s hand and returning his attention to his breakfast.
“Mr. Jonas Hammond to see you sir,” Mr. Reynolds announced entering with the inquisitor’s card on a silver tray for Darcy’s inspection.
“Please show him into my study and tell him I will come directly.”
Mr Reynolds bowed and retreated from the room, closing the door behind him.
“I wonder what brings Mr. Hammond here, and so early in the day?” Darcy said, glancing at his pocket watch. Tucking it back into his pocket he hurried to finish his food.
“Who is this Me Hammond, my dear?” Elizabeth inquired.
“He is the inquisitor over Derbyshire.”
“Why do you suppose he has come here?” Elizabeth asked. “I hope there is no trouble with the tenants.”
“I shouldn’t think so. If you will excuse me, I will go to him now.”
“Yes, or course. You will find me in the sitting room when your meeting is through.”

Darcy took his leave of him wife and went to his study with long, purposeful strides. Upon entering, he found Mr. Hammond and another man. The second man was a little dirty and unkempt and had an arm cradled in a sling tied around his neck. His gaze remained on the floor; he never looked up even to acknowledge Darcy’s entrance.

The Grand Dissolute Book Tour

The year is 1998 and Jimmy Pagley is falling in love—with a pretty, foreign cafe waitress named Haydee. What he doesn't know is that Haydee is a temvelar, a time traveler from the 29th century, on a mission to find her old mentor. Soon Jimmy and Haydee find themselves caught up in a dark conspiracy of rogue temvelars and government agents, on a search that leads through airports and space stations, art museums and suburban bakyards, Greek temples and Medieval castles, and beyond time itself. The Grand Dissolute is a traveler's portrait of a tumultuous, romantic age—our own.

Joel Van Valin is the author of the fantasy novel, The Flower of Clear Burning and the publisher of Whistling Shade literary journal.  He lives with his wife Lisa, a veterinarian, in St. Paul.

Main Characters

Jimmy Pagley. A young veterinarian in St. Paul, Minnesota circa 1998. He has a crush on a cafe waitress named Haydee. What he doesn’t realize is that Haydee is really a time traveler from the future.
Haydee Trebes. A temvelar, or time traveler from the 29th century, currently under cover in 20th century America (known as “The Grand Dissolute”). Temvelars are not supposed to have relationships with the natives they are studying, and so Haydee tries to ignore her feelings for Jimmy.
Joachim Six. Haydee’s mentor and the director of the temvelar field office in late 20th century St. Paul. His disappearance prompts Haydee to enlist Jimmy’s help in finding Joachim.

Supporting Characters on Tarrymore

Toma Bolingbroke. A friend of Haydee’s father, who often advises her. He works in the Time Ministry on planet Tarrymore, Haydee’s home planet.
Deneb. Haydee’s best friend on Tarrymore, who teaches at a school.
Chauncy and Zela. Haydee’s sister and niece, who also live on Tarrymore.
Helena Brown. The new director of the Time Ministry in the 29th century. Her efforts to rein in the powers of the temvelars out in the field has caused a backlash within the ministry.
Letitia Beringause. A temporal engineer on Tarrymore who has recently disappeared. She turns up in 20th century St. Paul, and is not the friendliest gal to deal with.
Eliot Eflan. Another citizen of Tarrymore who has recently disappeared. He has a facility with languages.
Lauro Rain. The town constable on Tarrymore. Investigating the disappearance of Letitia and Eliot, he and Toma begin to realize it is related to the missing Joachim Six.
General Barzov. Head of Security in the Time Ministry. Commonly known as Time Cops, his unit hunts down and apprehends temvelars who have “gone native” in their historical era.

Supporting Characters on Earth

Pixie. A waitress at the Run for Your Money cafe, and Haydee’s friend.
Marissa and Dix: Haydee’s field technicians in 20th century St. Paul. They operate the time theater in the back room of a picture frame shop and monitor Haydee’s movements for any dangers from causality.
Cousins. Jimmy’s best friend, and a left-wing political activist.
Chas, Amy, Bob. Other college friends of Jimmy’s, who are often seen partying.
Undset. A government agent, the head of a mysterious department called Lost and Found. He spends time playing golf and grilling for his suburban family.
Wordihoff. An underling of Undset’s, often seen in the company of Letitia Beringause.
Rob. A private investigator and baseball fan. He spends a lot of time on stakeouts in his car investigating insurance fraud. His boss, Miller, assigns him to spy on Haydee.
Billie. A wife and mother of two in Bakersfield, California, who bought a pretty drinking goblet at a garage sale, not realizing it originated in Ancient Greece. Joachim Six had been tracing the cup back through time shortly before he disappeared.
Joe Broderson. A resident of Wakefield, Nebraska, whose grandmother owned the drinking goblet before Billie.
The Whistler. A powerful being who is the gardener of the Castle, a strange place under the river of time.
